Argentine Tango in Europe

Europe has different flavors of Tango in every country

There is a saying that the Mexicans came from the Aztecs, the Peruvians came from the Incas, and the Argentines came from the boat. They came mostly from Europe, from Italy and Spain, and brought parts of their culture that mixed in the barrios of Buenos Aires and Montevideo into the Tango.

Gardel was probably born in France. Today 60% of Argentines claim an Italian heritage and the names of many of the top Tango musicians show it (D'Arienzo, Pugliese, Piazzolla). Perhaps this is why the Tango is so popular in Europe, and especially in Italy.

Tango as we know it would not exist without the love of the Europeans. Young Argentines brought the Tango into the salons of Paris in a time when the expression, "rich as an Argentine," meant super rich. They sparked the Tango mania of 1912 in Paris, which spread through the European capitals and jumped the Atlantic to New York in 1913 causing the Argentine elite to embrace the Tango as their own.

Argentine dictators suppressed the Tango starting in 1955. They almost killed it, but as soon as they lost power in 1983, the Tango show "Tango Argentino" opened in Paris and started the global Tango Renaissance which we are part of today.

The Tango of Europe is more relaxed. Dancers dress more casually and lack the US Americans' obsession with Buenos Aires style. Each of the European countries and even different cities have their own flavor of the Tango. Tango marathons and private Tango events are very popular.

Paris and Berlin vie for the title of Tango Capital of Europe, while there is a warm Tango all over Italy. The Dutch offer a lovely, welcoming embrace. Finland has its own distinct style of Tango and the biggest Tango festival there draws about 100,000 people.
