Tango Acropolis of Athens, Greece, the official local branch of the Tango Buenos Aires Festival & Dance World Cup 2012, is presenting Argentine Tango workshops, milongas (Tango parties), performances by Tango champions and a Tango photo exhibition at Lafayette Grill, a popular Greek Restaurant in downtown New York City on Saturday and Sunday, January 28th and 29th.
Argentine Tango is a social dance enjoyed by millions around the world. “Greece is one of the countries where Tango is most popular and the Greeks have a reputation as a fun people and exceptional dancers,” said Ximena Ojeda, Tango Beat Cultural Director.
Tango Salón workshops will be presented by Luis and Elena Mestre, creators of Tango Acropolis and founders of the Academy of Tango in Athens. The Saturday milonga will include a special performance by 2011 Tango Acropolis champions Dionisis and Cloe Theodoropoulos. A photography exhibition of Tango in Greece, “Dancing with the Gods,” will be shown on both days.
“We are proud that Tango Acropolis chose to make their official New York presentation at Lafayette Grill,” said owner Dino Bakakos. “Greeks love to dance so we offer our guests dinner with dancing or live music Monday through Saturday.” According to Tango host Peter Giasemis, “Lafayette Grill is the only place in New York City where you can dance Tango four nights a week in a lovely restaurant that feels like a Buenos Aires Tango club.”

The Tango Buenos Aires Festival & Dance World Cup is the “olympics” of Tango that takes place every August. Last year it was attended by over 400,000 people. Tango Acropolis, to be held June 21-24 in Athens, is one of five preliminary championships around the world that feed into the final in Buenos Aires. “We invite all Americans to vacation in Athens this June to enjoy Argentine Tango with the sunny smiles of the Greek people,” said Mr. Mestre.
Tango absorbs the flavors of every country and city where it is danced. “Tango Acropolis in New York City is a rare opportunity to enjoy Argentine Tango at the highest levels with the accents of Athens where western civilization began,” said Ms. Ojeda.
