Spanish Astoria Tango Club

A Journey Through Time and Place
by Keith Widyolar, published 2011-12-04

Once upon a time in Buenos Aires, families got together with friends to eat and drink and dance a little in a simple setting that was suitable for the whole family. It is not a dream. It is a rare thing to find outside of Buenos Aires, but it is happening now in New York at the Astoria Tango Club of Centro Español, a social and cultural society of Spaniards in Astoria, Queens.

by Keith Widyolar, published 2011-11-05

The center of Tango in Buenos Aires is not in the center of the city. It is outside in the barrios. One of New York's top Tango producers, Hector Pablo Pereyra, known as "El Pulpo" (the octopus), is reaching out into Queens and New Jersey with big bands, Electro-Tango and a little dash of Argentine ingenuity.

Spanish YouTango?

published 2011-01-28

YouTango? is a Tango musical at the Thalia Spanish Theatre in Queens, a theatre known for its productions of flamenco, Tango and zarzuelas (Spanish operettas). Although the theatre is known for bilingual productions, it is not just theatre in Spanish, but rather the theatre of Spain and countries with roots in Spain. The Thalia Spanish Theatre is an intimate theatrical space that while once common in New York City has largely vanished under the commercial pressures of the Big Apple. Watching a show at the Thalia is a journey to another time and place.

"When the Tango is Over You Remember How it Felt, Not What Steps You Did"

An interview with Pablo Inza and Nazarena Colombo

NEW YORK 2010-07-14 - Tango Beat interviewed Pablo and Nazarena after their performance at Tango Cafe, the home of Tango Nuevo in New York organized by Adam Hoopengardner and Ciko Tanik. It was Pablo's first visit to New York and for most of us who have followed Pablo's career, the first time we saw him dance with Nazarena. In contrast to Pablo's very dramatic earlier work, you could sense deep caring in the Tango of this couple.

Pablo has been dancing since 1991 and working the international festivals since 1999. He is a key organizer of the famous Practica X milonga in Buenos Aires and recently ended his creative direction of the Festival Cambalache, which combines Tango, modern dance and theatre. Nazarena works as a lawyer but trained extensively in ballet and jazz dance and draws inspiration from her grandfather a Tango singer.

The Greatest Thing You’ll Ever Learn Is Just to Love and Be Loved in Return

Murat and Michelle Erdemsel

NEW YORK 2010-04-23 - Late one night at La Viruta in Buenos Aires, Marcela Troncoso, an Argentine master teacher based in Malmö Sweden asked if I wanted to know the secret of the tango. I answered, “Of course,” thinking that Marcela would tell me something special about the embrace, a way to walk, or a step. She whispered over my shoulder, “It is simple. The secret of Tango is love.”

At first I thought Marcela wanted to go home with me, but quickly understood that she was speaking of something much bigger than this. The Tango is an invitation to love and be loved for three songs, to be held in a protective circle of care and respect, to listen and be listened to, and within this framework to open into one another so that two can become one. All of this is part of love.

Marcela was telling me that if I could honestly love her, we could have a beautiful Tango for three songs. Nothing more, but nothing less.
