Argentine Tango in Portland, Oregon USAPortland is one of the capitals of Tango in the USA and is becoming known for the 'Portland Embrace' Clay Nelson, whose Portland Tangofest in October is the biggest US festival, has a reputation for being the best festival organizer in the states. He also produces Portland ValenTango in February, Ashland Turkey Tango in November, TodosTango in Mexico in January and other festivals. Portland is the home base of Alex Krebs, one of the great US Tangueros and many other popular teachers. Portland teachers are now spreading across the country helping to build new Tango communities. Jaimes Friedgen and Christa, and Jennifer Olson are based in Seattle. J Abling is based in San Diego. Through the efforts of these and other artists, Portland has become an important USA Tango community, so much so, that the 2010 Portland TangoFest presented only Portland-bred instructors and DJs. |
